Nigerian Mayor of Southwark Borough dies in London

THE Nigerian Mayor of the Borough of Southwark, in London, Mr Tayo Situ, is dead.

His colleague and fellow councillor representing South Camberwell, Peter John, announced that Situ died on Monday night at the age of 56 years.

“It is with great personal sadness that I have to inform you of the death of our Mayor of Southwark, Cllr Tayo Situ, on Monday, May 9, 2011 at about 11.00 pm.

“Although Tayo had been ill for a number of weeks, his passing is a grievous blow to his family, his friends and our borough,” John said.

Situ was educated at The Polytechnic in Ibadan and studied Economics before leaving Nigeria for the United Kingdom (UK) in 1985.

He studied accountancy at South Bank University, London and ran his own business.

As a councillor, his priorities were to see more jobs for local people and better services for the young and vulnerable.

Mayor Situ died of cancer and was survived by wife, Abike, five children and grandchildren.
