Man, 29, hangs self over HIV/AIDS status

A 29-year-old man hanged himself after medical results of his protracted illness showed he was HIV/AIDS positive, though he did not leave any note to say why he committed suicide.

The incident, which occurred at Sangere village in Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa State, took place in the house where the deceased, Emmanuel Peter, was solely occupying while serving as a securityman and has since thrown the community into panic.

The uninhabited house where the deceased committed suicide is said to be owned by an unnamed woman, who the deceased family said contributed immensely to offsetting the medical bills of the deceased during his protracted illness.
The discovery of the death of Emmanuel brought confusion as resident trooped out to the scene where his corpse was hanging from the ceiling, with his  body being  held by a wire he used to hang himself.

Many of the sympathisers at the scene when the  Nigerian Tribune visited  lamented the “grave display of ignorance by the deceased” whose actions they said surprised them.

Musa  Danjuma,  who spoke to  the Nigerian Tribune after the police removed the corpse from the scene,  said the deceased must have contemplated his suicide well in advance. He said proof of this was the discovery of broken batteries found among his clothings.

“We suspect he unsuccessfully attempted to terminate his life  through the consumption of the dark powdery content of many of the broken batteries seen among his clothings before he resorted to a much faster death in the morning by  hanging,” Danjuma said.

A relative of the deceased, who identified herself as Magdalene Peter, said the deceased had battled with a protracted illness before the medical report of last weekend confirmed his ailment as HIV/AIDS.
According to her, Emmanuel was subsequently informed that he had HIV/AIDS.
