Sam Waley-Cohen: Prince William and Kate's Royal Matchmaker

Like the rest of us, Prince William was reportedly taken by Kate Middleton at first glance. Then again, he was taken by a lot of women. But when he first introduced himself to Kate, she gave the prince a customary curtsy and his reaction was spilling his drink all over himself, which is, of course, the international sign for "I think you're hot".

While they have an appropriately adorable "meet-cute", the two hit a royal bump in March 2007 when they temporarily split.

The guy said to be responsible for getting them back together is Sam Waley-Cohen, and if it weren't for him, we would not be anticipating to watch the Royal Wedding tomorrow by 11am GMT.

“Oh I don’t know about that. I don’t think it was with me with my Cupid’s arrow! I genuinely don’t know if I had anything to do with it," Cohen says.

But it was at Cohen's party that Prince William and Kate reunited. Taking place in Sam's family's 17th century mansion in Oxford just months after their breakup, the couple was seen in deep conversation at the party. Just weeks later, they took a trip to a private island on a yacht together.

“They’ve both been friends for a long time,” Cohen laughs. “I think they got back together of their own accord.”

The 28 year-old amateur jockey is also a prominent English businessman. His brother Tom was a schoolmate of Kate's, but sadly died of bone cancer at the age of 20.

The famous photograph of Kate Middleton in short shorts and a disco shirt took place at a fundraiser organized by Sam for his brother.
