Zachary Quinto: I'm a Gay Man

Actor Zachary Quinto is out and proud. Zachary has never publicly spoken about his sexual orientation—until now.

In a new interview with New York Magazine, he opens up about being “a gay man.”

He just wrapped up an eight-month run in the recent New York stage revival of ‘Angels in America’ and called the experience an eye-opener. Maybe that’s what motivated him to come out?

In the interview he calls his work in the off-Broadway play the "most challenging thing I've ever done as an actor, and the most rewarding."

"At the same time," he adds, "as a gay man, it made me feel like there's still so much work to be done, and there's still so many things that need to be looked at and addressed."

Later in the same interview the Star Trek star discussed same sex marriages and the suicide of bullied gay teen Jamey Rodemeyer, the same teenager Lady Gaga dedicated her iHeartRadio performance to last month.

"And again, as a gay man I look at that and say there’s a hopelessness that surrounds it," he said. "But as a human being I look at it and say 'Why? Where's this disparity coming from, and why can't we as a culture and society dig deeper to examine that?' We're terrified of facing ourselves."

Zachary has played a series of gay roles, including on Tori Spelling’s TV show So NoTORIous, and on the new FX series American Horror Story, but in the past he’s refused to comment on his sexuality.

The LA Times noted, “the blogosphere is rife with speculation about his sexuality” but that “he prefers not to feed the rumor mill with either substantiation or dismissal” during his ‘Angels in America’ show.

Of course Zachary isn’t the only star to confess his sexual orientation in a huge magazine. Right after American Idol wrapped up, Adam Lambert spoke frankly about his sexuality, though he didn’t think his revelation was particularly shocking.

"I don't think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I'm gay," Lambert told Rolling Stone in 2009. "I started to realize I wasn't like every other boy.”

Lance Bass famously confessed he was gay to People magazine back in 2006. "I knew that I was in this popular band and I had four other guys' careers in my hand, and I knew that if I ever acted on it or even said (that I was gay), it would overpower everything," said Bass, referring to band mates Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick, JC Chasez and Justin Timberlake.

Are you surprised by Zachary’s confession?
