Former WNBA player Margo Dydek died Friday, just over a week after suffering a heart attack. She was 37 years old.
Dydek was coaching the Northside Wizards of the Queensland Basketball League in Australia. The team's website said Friday that Dydek died peacefully surrounded by her family. She had suffered a heart attack in her home on May 19.
The 7-foot-2, Polish-born Dydek was the tallest women's professional basketball player and is still the WNBA's all-time leader in total blocks with 877. She played in 323 games with Utah, San Antonio, Connecticut and Los Angeles.
Utah selected Dydek with the first overall pick of the 1998 draft and she remained with the franchise, which was transferred to San Antonio, before being traded to Connecticut in 2005. She signed with Los Angeles in 2008 after taking time off due to pregnancy.
