5 Things You Should Know About Greyson Chance- The Next Big Thing

He’s the first singer to sign on to Ellen DeGeneres’ record label, but Greyson Chance seemed to pop up from nowhere.

The thirteen-year-old star appeared on Ellen’s talk show on Monday, when he announced that he’s preparing for his debut album. So could this newcomer be the long-awaited cure for Bieber fever? Probably not, but here are a few things you might want to know about the rising star:

He has Lady Gaga and his brother to thank: Chance posted a video cover to Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” on April 28, 2010. The video had a small amount of views until Greyson’s brother, Tanner, wrote a letter to Ellen DeGeneres asking her to watch the video. Ellen watched the video and shortly after asked Greyson to perform on her show. Ryan Seacrest also embedded the video on his website. The video then went seriously viral, with the Wall Street Journal, TV Guide and even Ashton Kutcher sharing its link.

He loves classic rock: Greyson says his favorite band is Journey. “I’m always thinking about ‘Don’t Stop Believing’” Greyson says, adding that he’s inspired by “old rock n’ roll” like AC/DC.

He’s already experienced heartbreak: Only thirteen and he already knows the pains of a broken heart. “I’ve been heartbroken for a little bit of a time and I wrote a whole record about it, so I’m not dating,” Chance said. “I wrote an album. It’s coming out around back-to-school time and it’s called, ‘Hold On Til the Night.’”

He’s kind of artsy-fartsy: “I’m very inspired by just art itself,” Greyson says. “Simple things. I love physical art, I love music, I love photography, paintings—I just find I love theater, I’m a very artsy guy.” At least we can expect more from his music than an internal conflict over which seat he’ll sit in on a Friday morning.

He’s already been on tour
: Chance toured last year with Australian pop singer Cody Simpson, who is all of fourteen years-old. “It’s very action-packed,” Chance said of the tour. “I love going to the venues, I love meeting all of the fans, I have so much fun on tour. I really do mean that, I have lots of fun.”
