Steve Jobs is responsible for changing how we consume content in the digital age, some technology pundits even calling him a modern-day Leonardo Da Vinci.
No details have emerged as of yet as to the cause of his death, but Jobs has been fighting a long battle with pancreatic cancer; sadly his death was not completely unexpected.
It's assumed his struggles with pancreatic cancer is what killed him. He was diagnosed with the cancer in 2004. Later that year he had the tumor in his pancreas removed and seemed to be in remission. Over the years he's been appearing very thin and gaunt at public appearance leading many people to fear for his ailing health.
At the end of June 2009 he announced a six-month leave of absence from Apple to focus on his health after getting a liver transplant. His transplant was deemed successful but unfortunately he took another leave of absence in January of this year due to health issues again.
While he made a few public appearances during his "leave" including the launch of the iPad 2, he ended up resigning as the CEO of Apple in August. In his resignation letter, Jobs wrote that he could "no longer meet [his] duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO."
Apple confirmed that Jobs passed away at the age of 56 and released this statement on their home page:
"Steve Jobs 1955 - 2011: Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."
This comes right off the news that the Apple released the newest iphone software recently and the iPhone 4S goes on sale on October 14 leading many Apple fan boys to declare that day, "Steve Jobs Day."
Steve Jobs founded Apple at age 21. He created what would become the world's most valuable technology company and revolutionized how people use the computer, phone and even the music industry. He is survived by his wife Laurene Poweel Jobs and his 4 children. One thing we can cling to is that he passed away with immense pride in everything he accomplished.
He once told the 2005 graduating class at Stanford, "Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do," said Jobs.
Steve Jobs passed away after a legacy of creating a life that he loved.
