Kerosene explosion kills two in Benin

A kerosene explosion has claimed the lives of two people in Benin, Edo state.

The victims, Saturday Igbani and his daughter Joy Igbani were consumed by the explosion, which occurred about 3.00 am on Saturday morning.

Wife of the deceased said she ran out of their house with their last child when the incident occurred. According to her, the explosion occurred when her husband wanted to pour kerosene into an already lighted lamp.

Another child of the victims was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) after he had suffered severe burns from the explosion.

Most of the domestic explosions in the country have been blamed on adulterated kerosene, but we have been unable to confirm if that was the case at Igbani’s home. A similar incident occurred in February this year, when an explosion caused by adulterated kerosene killed two children of a police sergeant in Rivers State.

  1. How many more lives would be lost because of some peoples' nonchallant/selfish attitude? When would we start valuing lives in this country?
