3 dead as UNN [University of Nigeria Nsukka] building collapses

A Faculty building under construction, belonging to the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, located at the old site of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, in Enugu, collapsed, yesterday, killing three persons and injuring several others.

Five construction workers trapped in the building were rescued and rushed to the accident and emergency unit of the hospital for treatment while two others, who were in  critical conditions, were rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital.

However, the hospital Public Relations Officer, Mr. Cyril Keleze, who confirmed the incident, said only one person died in the incident, while four persons sustained injuries and were being treated.

He said: “The building is still ongoing, but it does not belong to the hospital. It is the property of the College of Medicine. We are sharing premises with them. All I can say is that only five persons were involved. One died and four are being treated. One is in a very critical state and adequate attention is being given to him.”

Rescue workers, including security men, were at work when Vanguard visited the scene yesterday. .

Efforts to contact the Provost of the College, Dr. D. J. Onwubere, over the development proved abortive.
It would be recalled that two buildings under construction in the state capital collapsed last  week allegedly due to poor construction and the use of substandard material.
