Ryan Seacrest: 'American Idol race is tight'

Tonight's episode of the Fox competition will see Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery and Haley Reinhart each singing three songs in a bid to advance to next week's season ten grand finale.

Speaking on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, host Seacrest said: "Randy gave Haley a bit of a hard time so it will be interesting to see if there's a backlash to that vote and where the teen girls' vote will go... It's very tight. They're going to do three songs each this week and the way it's been going, I think it will come down to how they perform this week."

When pressed by Leno for a prediction on who could win, he quipped: "I think Kirstie Alley is doing a great job and she may win it all!" Alley is one of the finalists currently competing on Dancing with the Stars.

Seacrest also admitted during the Tuesday night interview that he sometimes doesn't understand what judge Steven Tyler means by some of his critiques when he has to recap the judges' comments on the results show.

"I look down at the card and panic inside because I've got to read back what Steven Tyler has said the night before and sometimes I'm not quite sure what he means and neither is the kid," he laughed. "They're looking at me, I'm looking at them…

"It's, 'Randy thought you were pitchy, dawg, or whatever. Jennifer thought you were fantastic. Steven Tyler said, 'Hell fire save some matches, F a duck and see what hatches' (sic).''

"I'm thinking, 'Just get to the nationwide vote and don't screw this up!'"

However, the presenter - who was recently named the most powerful man in reality television - praised all three judges for doing a "fantastic job" over the course of the tenth season.
