Police, Boko Haram in gun battle

Police, on Thursday, disclosed that a gang suspected to be Boko Haram members raided a police station in Maiduguri during the night.

Borno State Police Chief, Mohamed Jinjiri Abubakar, said the gang where involved in a gun battle with members of the force for about an hour.

"A large number of gunmen, believed to be members of Boko Haram attacked a police station in [Maidugiuri]," the police chief said. "A gun battle lasted about one hour between the gunmen and the police attached to the station."

Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, has witnessed several attackers by suspected members of the Boko Haram Sect.

On Wednesday, an ambush by members of the radical group led to the death of a policeman and two civilians.

Last October, the group warned, in Maiduguri, it would attack anyone who assists the police or and other security operatives with information.

They also warned residents to stay away from the police or soldiers so that attacks on the law enforcement agencies would not affect them.
