Naval rating beats man to death in Benue

A Naval rating attached to the Makurdi Naval Police beat one Philip Udoh, to death in Makurdi, Benue State on Tuesday.
The naval rating, who is popularly known as Charlie, attacked the deceased, a carpenter who was said to have failed to deliver a set of furniture to him on the agreed date.

Charlie went to the carpenter’s workshop to collect the said furniture, but was told by the deceased that he could not complete the work for certain reasons, urging him to be patient.

The assailant, according to an eye witness account, became very angry and warned the deceased not to repeat “those silly reasons” having collected N5,000 from him with the assurance that the job would be ready for collection.

The naval rating, according to Nigerian Tribune source,picked a hard object from the ground and hit the victim’s head with it leading to his death.

When the assailant noticed his victim was no longer breathing, he was said to have run to the B Division of the Benue State Police Command to report the incident.

Udoh was later confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, having been taken there by sympathisers.

Meanwhile, Charlie has been transferred to the headquarters of the Benue State police command for further interrogation on the matter.

When contacted, the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Alaribe Ejike, said he was yet to be fully briefed on the incident. He, however, promised that the command would brief the media on the matter as soon as information was received from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID)
