Grandfather on trial for raping 10-year-old

A 62-year-old grand father, Abdullahi Salisu, on Friday appeared before a Kasuwar-Nama Area Court, Jos, for allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl.

According to the prosecuting police officer, Gokwat Ibrahim, the accused committed the offence at about 2 p.m. on April 12, at Filin-Ball area of Jos. He said that the mother of the girl discovered that her daughter was allegedly raped and promptly reported the matter to Laranto Police Station, Jos.

“The accused was arrested, while the victim was rushed to Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Jos for test and treatment,” he said.

Ibrahim asked the court to give him more time to complete investigation and collect the medical report from the hospital, adding that the report would enable the police to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt against the accused.

The accused person pleaded not guilty to the charge, while his counsel, Steven Ahile, appealed that he be granted bail. Ahile, while arguing for bail, urged the court to “tamper justice with mercy’’ and heed the bail plea.

The Judge, Mustapha Hassan, granted the bail in the sum of N30,000 with one surety in like sum, and adjourned the case to June 13, for further hearing.
