Breast Cancer Scam

DEVIOUS Rachel Whibberley claimed she had breast cancer as she fleeced her older lover of his retirement cash.Whibberley, 25, has been jailed for stealing £26,430 from 68-year-old Brian Howard’s bank accounts over two years. When he realised money was going missing Whibberley came up with the cancer ruse to create sympathy for herself. She even took Mr Howard with her to hospital for fake appointments – then left him in the canteen while she pretended to see doctors.Prosecutor Peter Hussey told a court that Whibberley also began a “complete charade” of trying to sort out the problem of the missing money by making fictitious phone calls to the bank and claiming her lover’s card had been cloned.Mr Hussey added: “She then engineered sympathy for herself by telling Mr Howard that she had breast cancer.

“He still finds it difficult to cope with what was done to him. He has withdrawn from his family and still breaks down and cries.”Whibberley, of Prestatyn, Denbighshire, admitted theft and was jailed for 18 months.Judge Elgan Edwards QC told her at Chester crown court she had breached “a high degree of trust”. Myles Wilson, defending, said Whibberley is in a new relationship and is pregnant. Lloyds TSB returned the cash stolen from former car worker Mr Howard, of Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, who said after the case: “She told all the ladies in the warden-controlled flats where I live about her supposed illness and they threw their arms around her.”
